iOS 27 CarPlay New Features: Meta AI, ChatGPT, Siri AI & Supported iPhones

Updated August 30, 2026

Quick Answer

iOS 27 expands Apple CarPlay with a much bigger focus on AI, voice interaction and richer apps. Third-party assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Grok already work in CarPlay, while Meta AI is beginning to roll out. Apple is also bringing Siri AI into the iOS 27 generation with deeper integration across the iPhone ecosystem.

Beyond AI, iOS 27 adds new CarPlay capabilities including a MiniPlayer, video apps for supported parked vehicles, improved navigation interfaces and broader Voice Control support.

  • Meta AI: CarPlay support is rolling out.
  • ChatGPT: Already available as a voice-first CarPlay app.
  • Siri AI: Part of Apple's iOS 27 AI generation, with stricter hardware requirements.
  • iOS 27 compatibility: iPhone 11 and newer, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later.

iOS 27 Pushes CarPlay Further Into AI

CarPlay is no longer evolving only through better navigation, music controls and widgets. One of the most important changes around iOS 27 is the growing role of AI assistants inside the car.

Apple introduced support for voice-based conversational apps earlier in 2026, opening CarPlay to services built around ongoing voice conversations rather than traditional touch-heavy interfaces.

That decision has already brought ChatGPT, Perplexity and Grok into CarPlay. Meta AI is now beginning to join them, while Siri AI gives Apple its own much more integrated answer.

For drivers, the practical change is simple: CarPlay is becoming a place where multiple AI assistants can coexist, rather than relying almost entirely on Siri for voice interaction.

This also builds on Apple's earlier CarPlay changes. ZAAP previously covered the CarPlay features introduced with iOS 26.2, including expanded widgets and new messaging controls.

Third-Party AI Apps Are Expanding in CarPlay

ChatGPT is currently one of the clearest examples of how conversational AI works in CarPlay.

Users can launch ChatGPT from the CarPlay screen, start a new voice conversation, continue recent chats and even access Projects. The experience is intentionally voice-first so drivers do not need to interact with a full mobile interface.

Meta AI is following the same broader direction. Its CarPlay support has started appearing for iPhone users, although availability is still being enabled gradually across accounts.

Perplexity and Grok have also introduced dedicated CarPlay experiences, while some other AI services have used CarPlay widgets as an alternative way to launch voice interactions.

The important point is that Apple is not turning these apps into unrestricted replacements for Siri. They still operate inside Apple's CarPlay framework and only receive the capabilities Apple makes available to their app category.

Meta AI, ChatGPT and Siri AI Side by Side

The three assistants share conversational AI features, but their roles in CarPlay are different.

AI Assistant CarPlay Status Main Role
Meta AI Rolling out Voice AI conversations
ChatGPT Available Voice chats, recent conversations and Projects
Siri AI iOS 27 generation AI plus deeper Apple ecosystem integration

Meta AI and ChatGPT are third-party conversational services. Siri AI has a different advantage because Apple can connect it more deeply with supported iPhone features, personal context and system actions.

That means drivers may eventually use different assistants for different jobs: ChatGPT or Meta AI for conversations and information, and Siri AI when deeper Apple integration matters.

AI in CarPlay: What Drivers Can Actually Use

The new AI experience is designed around voice rather than a full-screen chatbot interface.

A typical flow looks like this:

  1. Connect your iPhone to a compatible Apple CarPlay vehicle.
  2. Open a supported AI app such as ChatGPT or Meta AI.
  3. Start a voice conversation.
  4. Continue asking questions while keeping interaction with the display to a minimum.

This works well for general questions, explanations, brainstorming and longer voice conversations.

There are still limits. Third-party CarPlay AI apps do not automatically receive full access to Apple Maps, your vehicle, live location, Messages or every other iPhone app.

ChatGPT, for example, currently cannot control the car or other apps through its CarPlay experience.

CarPlay AI is not the same as system-level Siri access.

Apple is giving third-party AI services a safer voice interface inside CarPlay, not unrestricted control over the iPhone or vehicle.

Supported iPhones and Compatibility

iOS 27 supports iPhone 11 and newer models, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later. If your iPhone supports iOS 27 and your vehicle already supports Apple CarPlay, many of the software-based CarPlay improvements can work without requiring a new car. Some features may still depend on the vehicle, app, region or manufacturer support.

However, supporting iOS 27 does not mean every iPhone receives every AI feature.

Apple Intelligence and Siri AI have higher hardware requirements. Apple currently supports iPhone 16 models and later, plus iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max for these AI features.

Feature iPhone Requirement
iOS 27 iPhone 11 or newer; iPhone SE (2nd generation) or newer
Regular CarPlay features Compatible iPhone + CarPlay vehicle or head unit; some features may require additional vehicle or app support
Meta AI in CarPlay Supported iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later + latest Meta AI app; availability is still rolling out by account
ChatGPT in CarPlay Supported iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later + latest ChatGPT app
Siri AI / Apple Intelligence iPhone 16 or later, iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max

If you are currently testing the software rather than waiting for the final release, our iOS 27 Public Beta installation and downgrade guide also covers backup and compatibility considerations.

Meta AI Is Still Rolling Out

Meta AI has added CarPlay support, but not every account can use it yet.

Some users can already see Meta AI on the CarPlay Home Screen but receive a message saying the experience is not supported for their account when they open it.

If that happens, it does not necessarily indicate a problem with your iPhone or vehicle. Meta appears to be enabling the feature gradually.

Keep the iPhone and Meta AI app updated, but expect account and regional availability to vary while the rollout continues.

Beyond AI: More CarPlay Changes in iOS 27

AI is one of the most interesting iOS 27 CarPlay changes, but it is not the only one.

Apple is also expanding what media, navigation and voice-enabled apps can do inside the car.

New MiniPlayer

iOS 27 introduces a MiniPlayer for CarPlay's Now Playing experience. It makes current audio easier to see and, on larger displays, can provide quick playback controls such as play, pause and skip.

Video Apps While Parked

CarPlay is gaining support for video browsing and playback in supported vehicles while parked. This gives compatible apps a more appropriate interface for watching video when the car is stationary.

Better Voice Controls

The Voice Control template is expanding across CarPlay app categories in iOS 27, giving more developers a consistent way to show conversation status and controls for voice-driven experiences.

Navigation Gets More Flexible

Navigation apps gain new interface options, including panels that can show more information while keeping the map visible. Apple is also adding Route Sharing, allowing supported navigation apps to coordinate route information more closely with compatible vehicle systems.

Together, these changes make iOS 27 a broader CarPlay update than AI alone.

Keeping Your iPhone Cooler During Long CarPlay Drives

Long CarPlay sessions can keep several iPhone functions active at once, including GPS navigation, mobile data, music streaming and wireless charging. During longer drives, especially in warm weather, that combination can make charging heat build up more easily.

Using a charger with active cooling can help manage that extra heat while the iPhone remains mounted and charging. The ZEERA SuVolt Gen5 Qi2.2 25W Active Cooling Car Charger combines Qi2.2 magnetic charging with semiconductor cooling for extended CarPlay and navigation use.
